•Ability to create a detailed “As-Built Schematic” by documenting valve types, decoder models, wire connections, grounding, and controller specifications for faster future troubleshooting.
•Hands-on proficiency with electrical testing tools including volt meters, RMS milliampere clamp meters, TDRs, wire tracers, toners, and ground fault locators.
•Skill in differentiating a “good” versus “bad” controller by comparing status with and without field wires connected (incoming voltage, transformer output, fuse resistance, and line surveys).
•Confidence in testing and identifying good versus bad decoders through amp-load measurements (on field wires and alternate 24 VAC) and decoder programmer status checks.
•Practical techniques to evaluate wire splices visually and by resistance measurement to confirm connection integrity.
•Mastery of a structured Plan of Action and scientific methodology (ask the question, research, hypothesize, test, analyze, conclude) tailored to 2-wire systems.
•Expertise in using controller diagnostics—current electrical status, alarms/warnings, historical logs, and component ping tests—to gather critical data and support accurate conclusions.
•Ability to analytically review results, document findings, and generate clear reports for owners, suppliers, and manufacturers, leading to more efficient repairs and reduced downtime.
